What is an Apostille?
Apostilles authenticate the seals and signatures of officials on public documents such as birth certificates, court orders, or any other document issued by a public authority so that they can be recognized in foreign countries that are members of The 1961 Hague Convention Treaty.
The use of apostilles abolished the requirement of legalization for foreign public documents which required diplomatic or consular agents of the country in which the document was to be produced to certify the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document has acted and, where appropriate, the identity of the seal or stamp which it bears.
Why would I need an Apostille?
Documents issued in the United States must be authenticated or legalized before you can use them in another country. If you do not have a document with an apostille attached for use in another country, they will not be recognized with the same legal value they have here in the United States.
Reasons an apostille would be needed in another country:
- · To continue education overseas
- · To obtain a new job in another country
- · To open a bank account in another country
- · To conduct business overseas
